Daicon V: The Gainax Sprit (A virtual Retrospective)
Note* When I think Of Gainax I think of three anime specifically that perfectly encapsulates the Gainax sprit. Those of course being Gunbuster, NGE and, Gurren Lagann. sadly in the west I feel like Gunbuster get’s over looked a lot. It is hard to find a hard copy of the OVA outside of Japan. It is not streaming on Netflix or Crunchyroll. It has no Funimation dub. In fact I had to dig pretty deep into some archives to even find decent fodder to work with, as well figuring out who owned what for licensing was kind or an ordeal. Still Gunbuster is a gem of a series. It was the first of many things for the studio. The first time we see what would be known as the “Gainax bounce” A mecha anime being used as a vehicle for more existential storytelling. Touching on concepts and ideas about space that would later be expounded upon by films like “Interstellar”. As well Gunbuster was the directorial debut for the legendary Hideaki Anno. I think it is safe to say that Gunbuster was in fact the blueprint that Gainax would follow into the future as well as being one of the best mecha anime ever in my humble opinion. I honestly cannot say enough about it. So if you have never see t please seek it out. It is worth a watch. and I hope you enjoy these colorings I have done of Haruhiko Hikimoto’s illustration. These are actual character references and promotional materials used for the OVA. It was cool to get to work with a little piece of Gainax history. Something I hope to continue as this retrospective moves forward.
… Also I would like to take a moment to honor a place that is dear to my heart, and I do not think I can talk about this series without bring it up. That is of course the island of Okinawa. A place who’s history is just as sorrowful as is beautiful. A place I think of as a kind of home. So I dedicate this set to the people of Okinawa, and I truly hope to see a day where it will be free to make it’s own decisions and celebrate it’s own unique and beautiful culture. Thank you for giving me your time, as always. You are appreciated.

These was some of the most fun I had editing. I used artistic license with these like I have never really done before. the photographs were taken and edited by me. They are both from my time in Houston. As well the 9th page was re paneled using dif panels from separate pages. As well I retranslated all the text from English back into Japanese. This was a really fun set and I want to do more. As always thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy them as i enjoyed making them.

Note* Sketches made my Anno in the early 1980′s. Around the time of the DaiconIV animation short - the time he was working on (SDF) Macross: Do you Remember Love. You can see the first hints of Gunbuster here as well. I wanted to do these to pay tribute to the roots of this industry defining artist and one of my heroes and probably my biggest influence creatively. As well the studio that changed the face of the industry forever. These are The Daicon pages, I do hope you enjoy. Thank you.
